Pauillac
Pauillac is arguably the most prestigious of the Bordeaux regions as it is home to the three first growth châteaux – more than any other appellation in the region. Located on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary sandwiched between Saint-Julien to the south and Sainte-Estèphe to the north. Vineyards in Pauillac are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and wines are rich, full bodied and tannic meaning they age extremely well.
The Château
Château Batailley is a fifth growth wine of Bordeaux that has been in operation since the 1400s, making it one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux. The name Batailley comes from a battle that was fought in the ground of the château during the Hundred Year War in the 1400s in which the French managed to regain control of Château Latour from the English.
Daniel Guestier, a well known negotiant bought the château in the early 1800s and invested a lot of money into the estate’s wine making facilities and was instrumental in establishing the Pauillac’s reputation. Following Guestier’s death the chateau was acquired by Constant Halphen and then later by the Borie family. Fast-forward to today and Batailly is owned by Denise and Emile Castéja of the Borie-Manoux negotiants.
In 1942 the Château was divided into two separate wine estates that still operate today. These are Château Batailley and Château Haut-Batailley.
Château Batailley today has a reputation for quality and also value for money, many consider it to be among the best wines in the Pauillac region.
